Philadelphia – Today, Liz Shuler and Fred Redmond were re-elected as president and secretary-treasurer, respectively, of the AFL-CIO, America’s largest federation of unions. The following statement should be attributed to John Samuelsen, international president of the Transport Workers Union of America:
“The Transport Workers Union of America congratulates Liz Shuler and Fred Redmond on their re-elections as president and secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO.
“Today’s historic election comes at an unprecedented time for working people, who are standing up to bosses and organizing at rates we have not seen in decades. Simultaneously, the unilateral introduction of new, unproven and unregulated technologies into our economy, combined with the explosive rise of anti-worker business models, threatens to change the nature of work itself.
“Conquering these challenges will require the kind of coalition building leadership Shuler and Redmond have already demonstrated. They understand the struggles of working people, and are staunch defenders of the solid, good-paying jobs that expand opportunities and elevate all workers. They have proven time and again that they are serious advocates for workers and will always lend their voices to the fight to advance working families. America needs a hardworking, experienced labor leaders like Liz Shuler and Fred Redmond to guide the American trade union movement forward into the future.”
