TWU Victories

Fightback Victories

The Transport Workers Union is America’s Fightback Union, delivering life-changing contracts and strategic victories for members nationwide. Here’s a sampling of recent wins across all divisions.

Air

Thousands of Flight Attendants and Ramp, Operations, Provisioning, and Freight Agents at Southwest Airlines won significant wage increases in new contracts. Flight Attendants at TWU Local 556 and Ramp Workers at TWU Local 555 became the highest paid in the industry. A new contract for Flight Attendants at Allegiant Airlines set a new standard for low-cost carriers.

The TWU has recently expanded its presence at airlines nationwide with a string of organizing victories. Flight Dispatchers at Avelo Airlines, Fuelers at PrimeFlight Fuelers in Orlando, and Flight Instructors at PSA Airlines all recently voted to join the TWU by overwhelming margins. The TWU is the nation’s largest union of airline workers.

Transit, Universities, Utilities, and Services

Transit locals in Winston-Salem North Carolina and Philadelphia won new contracts after the operators unsucessfully tried to extract concessions from TWU members. In Columbus, Ohio, the TWU negotiated first-of-its-kind contract language that prevents the operator from installing autonomous technology that aims could kill jobs without the approval of the TWU. Shuttle Bus Operators for a Delta Airlines subsidiary and hundreds of Paratransit Operators in Houston joined the TWU after successful organizing campaigns

The TWU fought for years to institute minimum standards to protect trackworkers from on-the-job injuries and deaths. The Federal Transit Administration recently announced a final rule that gives workers the right to refuse unsafe work assignments and requires all transit agencies to follow standards for worker safety briefings, training sessions, and reporting near miss incidents.

Rail

The TWU successfully organized Onboard and Lead Attendants at Brightline after the Florida-based railroad unsucessfully fought against attempts to form a union. The Brightline workers are the largest newly organized group of railroad workers in the country in over 20 years.

The TWU successfully fought against Keolis in Boston and the MTA in New York – winning new contracts that significantly improve the lives of commuter railroad workers. Workers in Boston won a new contract with 23% average wages and paid sick leave for the first time ever. Metro-North rail workers won a new contract with 9.5% raises and successfully fought attempts to increase healthcare costs, reduce vacation days, personal days, and sick days.
