The TWU Strongly Condemns Department of Labor Rule Misclassifying Thousands of Union Workers as Independent Contractors
In response to the Department of Labor issuing a final rule on independent contractor status, TWU International President John Samuelsen issued the following statement:
“The rule issued by Trump’s Department of Labor will destroy jobs and hurt middle class families. This rule would allow employers to unilaterally deny minimum wage, overtime, and other wage protections from worker. This is already happening in California, where major employers announced earlier this week that they will eliminate thousands of union jobs and outsource that labor to app-based companies under an exemption in state law similar to those envisioned by this rule.
“Allowing this rule to take effect would cost our economy hundreds of thousands of good union jobs – especially in the transportation sector. The TWU stands with all workers in calling for the next administration to reverse this jobs destroying rule.”
