TWU Sets
Katrina Relief Fund For Afflicted
Members, Families
International President Michael T.
O'Brien released the following statement
after establishing a relief fund to help
TWU members in the stricken Gulf Coast
region.
The human
tragedy caused by Hurricane Katrina is
almost beyond comprehension. So many
thousands of people in the region,
including TWU members, are desperately
in need of both immediate and long-term
assistance.
At this
writing, 13 TWU members employed by
Southwest Airlines, remain unaccounted
for. Many more employed by Southwest,
American Airlines and Amtrak may face
loss of jobs, family members and
property.
The federal
government has pledged billions in
relief to the region, and private
donations from companies, individuals
and other sources are pumping millions
more into the recovery effort.
We in TWU
believe that some form of financial
relief will ultimately reach those in
need. But, we want to insure that our
members and their families get
assistance as soon as possible, and we
are going to do everything possible to
see that goal accomplished.
The
International Union has set up its own
fund, called the TWU Katrina Relief
Fund, with an initial donation of
$50,000. We are urging TWU Locals and
members, wishing to do something to
help, to consider donating to this
fund. All monies collected will go
directly to afflicted TWU members and
their families.
As a union,
we must take care of our members both on
and off the job. TWU members and their
families are suffering. And we in the
International Union are determined to
work with our Local officers to identify
the TWU members impacted by this storm
and get relief to them directly as soon
as possible.
Please make
checks out to the TWU Katrina Relief
Fund, and send them to TWU International
Secretary Treasurer John J. Kerrigan at
TWU Headquarters, 1700 Broadway, New
York, NY 10019.
